Capel Garmon Burial Chamber

Neolithic chambered tomb on a hillside two miles east of the village

A signposted footpath climbs from the village of Capel Garmon to a Neolithic chambered tomb dating from around 3,500 BC. Three internal chambers and a passage survive under the remains of a long, kidney-shaped cairn. One of the massive capstones is still in place; another has slipped.

The site is unfenced and free to enter at any time. The hillside position gives long views across to the Carneddau, and the combination of prehistoric architecture and Snowdonia panorama is hard to beat. Bring a torch to look inside the chambers properly.

A story
The tomb was rediscovered in 1854 by a farmer clearing his field. He found the inner chambers had been used as a stable — the polished floors and curved walls had made an excellent shelter for sheep for a couple of centuries. The reused capstones were too large to move.
