Thomas Telford's elegant cast-iron span carries the A5 over the River Conwy at the eastern entrance to the village. It was opened in 1815 and is one of the earliest large cast-iron bridges still in daily traffic use. The single arch reaches across the river in a flat curve, the spandrels filled with delicate iron tracery of national emblems.
You don't need to seek it out — every coach into Snowdonia crosses it — but it is worth stopping to look at properly from the riverbank below. The contrast between the heavy ironwork and the soft Welsh river setting is the bridge's genius.
