Moel Siabod

872 m mountain east of Snowdon, with one of the best summit views in Wales

Moel Siabod is the prominent humped mountain visible to the south-west from the village. At 872 metres it falls just short of true mountain status by metric reckoning, but its position — out on its own east of the Snowdon massif — gives it one of the most rewarding summit views in Wales.

The classic route is the Daear Ddu ridge: a long approach from the Pont Cyfyng layby south of Capel Curig, then an enjoyable scramble along a rocky arête to the cairn. Six to seven hours round trip, with proper boots and weather sense. The easier western flank can be walked rather than scrambled, but you lose the best of the route.

A story
From the summit cairn, fourteen of the fifteen 3,000-foot peaks of Snowdonia are visible on a clear day — the most complete panorama in the national park. Sir Edmund Hillary trained on Moel Siabod before his 1953 Everest expedition.
