Glynn Vivian Art Gallery

Swansea's public art gallery occupies an Edwardian Baroque building a short walk uphill from Castle Square. The permanent collection is unusually strong for a regional gallery, ranging from Old Masters and Welsh landscape painters through Gwen John, Augustus John and Ceri Richards to contemporary work by Bedwyr Williams and others.

A 2016 refurbishment added an airy extension behind the original building. Admission is free, and there is a good cafe on the ground floor. Allow about an hour and a half, more if a temporary exhibition is on.

A story
Richard Glynn Vivian, who founded the gallery in 1911, lost his sight not long before it opened — meaning he could never see the building or the collection of paintings he had bought for his home city.
