The Protestant Church of Aruba is one of the oldest surviving buildings in Oranjestad, a modest white-painted church with a distinctive octagonal bell tower. It dates from 1846, though the congregation it served was established much earlier under Dutch colonial rule. The church still holds regular services and has not been converted to a museum or tourist attraction, which gives it an authenticity that is easy to appreciate.
The church sits close to Fort Zoutman in the historic core of the city. Its simple Caribbean colonial architecture — thick walls, wooden shutters, and a cool interior — is characteristic of the Dutch-influenced buildings that give Oranjestad its character. Worth a look from the outside even when services are not in progress.
