Straw Market

A two-storey covered market on Bay Street, the densest concentration of souvenir vendors in the Caribbean. Hundreds of stalls sell straw hats, baskets, T-shirts, conch-shell jewellery, wooden sculptures, knock-off handbags, and a thousand other things. Bargaining is expected; the first price is rarely the real one.

The market has more authentic straw work than first appearances suggest — look for woven baskets and bags made on the Out Islands (Andros, Long Island) rather than the imported plastic-fibre versions. Hot, loud, persistent vendors; not for everyone, but a Nassau institution and the obvious place for a souvenir.
