Edmonton International Fringe Theatre Festival

The Edmonton International Fringe Theatre Festival runs for eleven days in August in Old Strathcona, and it is one of the best reasons to be in Edmonton in summer. The festival is the second-largest fringe in the world, presenting over 1,500 performances across more than 40 indoor and outdoor venues. The shows range from professional touring productions to student groups making their first Fringe appearance — and the selection policy is deliberately non-curatorial.

The Fringe is centred on Whyte Avenue and the streets around it. During the festival, the neighbourhood is transformed: every available space becomes a venue, food stalls line the streets, buskers work the intersections, and a significant portion of Edmonton descends on the area each evening. The energy is unlike anything else the city produces.

Tickets are cheap and sold at the venue door. You can see three or four shows in an evening, wandering between venues without a precise plan. The outdoor stages are free. Come prepared for some misses alongside some genuinely good theatre — the Fringe model guarantees unpredictability, which is exactly the point.

A story
Edmonton's Fringe is the second-largest fringe festival in the world after Edinburgh — a fact that surprises many visitors when they first encounter it. The festival began in 1982, inspired directly by the Edinburgh model. It operates on a strict no-jury, no-censorship policy: any company that applies and pays the fee gets a slot. What they do with it is entirely their business.
