TELUS World of Science Edmonton

TELUS World of Science Edmonton is the city's major science museum and one of the most popular family attractions in the province. The complex sits in the river valley at the north end of Coronation Park and includes an IMAX theatre, a digital planetarium, an observatory, and several exhibition galleries covering space science, chemistry, technology, and health.

The planetarium programme is the main draw for many visitors — shows run throughout the day in the Margaret Zeidler Star Theatre, covering everything from dark matter to the night sky above Edmonton. The IMAX screen is one of the larger ones in Alberta and shows both documentary films and mainstream features. The science galleries are hands-on enough to hold children's attention.

The Observatory is open on clear Friday and Saturday evenings for public stargazing through the main telescope — admission is charged separately and sessions can fill up; booking ahead is recommended. Edmonton's cold, clear winters make for better viewing than most Canadian cities.

A story
The TELUS World of Science Edmonton was originally called the Edmonton Space and Science Centre when it opened in 1984. It was built to commemorate Alberta's 75th anniversary as a province and was deliberately ambitious: the IMAX theatre, the planetarium, and the science gallery were all intended to signal that Edmonton could support world-class cultural infrastructure. The Margaret Zeidler Star Theatre has a 23-metre dome, one of the largest in North America.
