Winspear Centre

The Francis Winspear Centre for Music is Edmonton's major performing arts venue and home to the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra. The hall seats 1,932 and was designed specifically for orchestral performance — the acoustics are widely regarded as among the best in Canada. The organ, the Davis Concert Organ, has 6,889 pipes and is one of the largest concert organs in the world.

The building sits on Sir Winston Churchill Square in the heart of downtown, alongside the Art Gallery of Alberta and the Royal Alberta Museum. The ESO season runs from September through May and typically includes guest conductors and soloists of international standing. The venue also hosts chamber concerts, popular music performances, and special events throughout the year.

The lobby is open to non-ticket holders on performance days — worth a look for the building itself, particularly the curved wooden walls of the main hall visible from outside.

A story
The Winspear Centre was funded partly through a $6 million gift from Francis Winspear, an Edmonton accountant who had spent decades believing the city deserved a world-class concert hall. He was in his eighties when he made the donation. The hall opened in 1997, and Edmonton's orchestra finally had an acoustic environment that matched its ambitions.
