Red Deer

Central Alberta city between Calgary and Edmonton, with river-valley trails and a historic downtown.

Red Deer sits almost exactly halfway between Calgary and Edmonton on the QE2 highway, making it a natural stopping point and a convenient base for exploring central Alberta. Founded in the late 19th century as a river crossing, the city has grown into Alberta's third-largest, with a walkable historic downtown and a surprisingly good restaurant scene.

The real draw here is the outdoors. The Red Deer River valley cuts through the city, and the extensive trail system along its banks is excellent for walking, cycling, and cross-country skiing. The Gaetz Lakes Sanctuary and Kerry Wood Nature Centre give the valley a strong interpretive presence, while Bower Ponds is where the city gathers in all seasons.

Nearby, you can explore the dramatic badlands around Drumheller or head west toward the foothills of the Rockies. Sylvan Lake, a popular summer beach destination, is just a short drive away. Fort Normandeau, a reconstruction of an 1885 frontier post, sits seven kilometres west of the centre at the original river crossing.
