Cardston

Southern Alberta Mormon settlement with a landmark temple and a world-class carriage museum.

Cardston is a small southern Alberta town close to the Montana border and the road to Waterton Lakes. It was founded by Latter-day Saint settlers in the late 19th century, and that history is still visible in the great pale mass of the Cardston Alberta Temple above town.

The surprise is how much museum weight Cardston carries for its size. The Remington Carriage Museum is the standout, with one of the world's strongest collections of horse-drawn vehicles. The Card Pioneer Home and Courthouse Museum keep the settlement story small-scale and local.

Cardston is not a big destination in the way Banff or Waterton Lakes National Park is. It is worth a day if you are already in southern Alberta and want a clear, compact look at Mormon pioneer history, prairie town architecture, and an unusually good specialty museum.
