Summerland is a small Okanagan town on the west side of Okanagan Lake, between Kelowna and Penticton. It has the lake-and-vineyard pleasures of the valley, but with a quieter feel than its bigger neighbours.
The town spreads from the lakeshore up to a sunny bench of orchards, wineries, and dry hills. Giant's Head Mountain rises almost in the middle of it all, giving a quick hike and a wide view over the lake. Below the hill, beaches and fruit stands carry the summer rhythm.
Summerland's best single attraction is the Kettle Valley Steam Railway, a short heritage ride on the old railway grade above Trout Creek. Add the Trout Creek Trestle, the Ornamental Gardens, and a tasting or two on Bottleneck Drive, and it makes an easy half-day or full day if you are already in the South Okanagan.
