Slave Lake is a small northern Alberta town on the southeast shore of Lesser Slave Lake, about 255 km northwest of Edmonton. The town itself is practical rather than pretty, but the lake beside it changes the calculation: long sand beaches, boreal forest, bird migration, and big northern skies are all close at hand.
The best reason to come is Lesser Slave Lake Provincial Park, especially the Devonshire Beach area north of town. It has pale sand, shallow water, dunes, forest trails, and a serious bird-conservation scene centred on the Boreal Centre and Lesser Slave Lake Bird Observatory.
This is not a polished resort town. It works best for travellers who want a northern lake base, a beach day that feels surprisingly remote, or a birding stop on the way deeper into northern Alberta.
