Columbia Wetlands

The Columbia Wetlands stretch for roughly 180 kilometres along the Rocky Mountain Trench south of Golden, forming one of the most ecologically significant wetland ecosystems in western Canada. The area supports more than 260 bird species, including trumpeter swans, great blue herons, osprey, and bald eagles. It is also important habitat for moose, deer, beaver, and black bear.

Canoe and kayak trips through the wetlands are a highlight for nature-oriented visitors. The route from Spillimacheen north to Golden passes through pristine oxbow lakes and marshes, with the Purcell Mountains rising steeply to the west and the Rockies to the east. Several outfitters in Golden offer guided paddling trips and canoe rentals. The best time to visit for birdwatching is spring migration, typically late April through May.

A story
The Columbia Wetlands form the headwaters of the Columbia River, which eventually flows 2,000 kilometres to the Pacific Ocean at Astoria, Oregon. This stretch south of Golden is one of the longest continuous wetlands in western North America and is recognized as a Wetland of International Significance under the Ramsar Convention.
