The Kicking Horse River offers some of the best whitewater rafting in British Columbia, with a combination of accessible Class III stretches and technical Class IV rapids that attract paddlers from across Canada. The river drops through the canyon below Golden, providing a dramatic backdrop of limestone walls and old-growth forest.
Several outfitters in Golden operate guided half-day and full-day raft trips throughout the summer season, roughly June to September, with the biggest water in late June as the snowmelt peaks. The lower canyon is suitable for families and beginners; the upper canyon section through the tighter gorges is reserved for more experienced groups. Kayaking courses and stand-up paddleboard rentals are also available from town.
