Kokanee Glacier Provincial Park is one of the great mountain landscapes above Nelson: granite, old ice, clear lakes, and high trails that feel much wilder than their distance from town suggests. The park is not a casual roadside stop; its best rewards come after a drive to the access roads and time on foot.
For independent travelers, this is a strong choice when Nelson's lakefront starts to feel too gentle. Summer brings wildflowers and long alpine walks, while shoulder seasons can mean snow, mud, or closed access. Treat it as mountain country, carry proper layers, and check current park conditions before setting out.
