Lakeside Park

Nelson's main green space hugs the shoreline on the western edge of the city. The park has a sandy beach suitable for swimming, a picnic area, tennis courts, a rose garden, and a bandshell used for summer concerts. The views across the west arm of Kootenay Lake to the mountains on the far shore are what makes it — on a calm evening the reflections are extraordinary.

This is where Nelson comes on hot summer days. Arrive early on weekends in July and August to get a spot on the beach.

A story
The 1987 Steve Martin comedy "Roxanne" — a modern retelling of Cyrano de Bergerac — was filmed largely in Nelson, using the town's Victorian streetscape as its backdrop. Lakeside Park and the surrounding neighbourhood appeared in several scenes. The production brought the town a brief moment of Hollywood attention and left behind a fond local mythology.
