Mount Revelstoke National Park

Alpine national park above Revelstoke with wildflower meadows, old-growth cedar, and panoramic summit views

Mount Revelstoke National Park wraps around the mountain that rises directly behind the town, offering a remarkable transition from Columbia River bottomlands to alpine tundra within a short drive. The park's signature experience is the Meadows in the Sky Parkway, a 26-kilometre road that climbs from near the Trans-Canada Highway to the summit ridge at 1,938 metres. In August the meadows are carpeted with alpine wildflowers — columbines, paintbrush, heather — and the views across the Columbia Valley and the Selkirk peaks are exceptional.

The lower elevations of the park hold some of the finest old-growth western red cedar forest in Canada. The Giant Cedars Boardwalk near the Trans-Canada is a short (500m) loop through trees over 500 years old and several metres in diameter, quiet and dark even on a bright day. The Skunk Cabbage Boardwalk crosses the Columbia bottomlands in the other direction, through a wetland bright with skunk cabbage flowers in spring.

Hiking trails range from the short boardwalks to the 67-kilometre Jade Lakes trail system. Bears are common; carry bear spray.

A story
Mount Revelstoke is one of the few national parks in Canada that was created at the request of local residents, who petitioned the federal government in 1914 to protect the mountain they could see from their front porches. The Meadows in the Sky Parkway was built in the 1920s partly to give residents access to those meadows by automobile.
