Telegraph Cove

Tiny North Vancouver Island boardwalk village and launch point for Johnstone Strait wildlife trips.

Telegraph Cove is a tiny boardwalk village on the east coast of northern Vancouver Island, tucked around a sheltered harbour facing Johnstone Strait. It is small enough to walk end to end in minutes, but in summer it becomes one of British Columbia's best launch points for whales, kayaking, fishing, and the Broughton Archipelago.

The cove has the feel of an old coastal work camp turned marine-wildlife base. Weathered buildings stand on pilings, boats nose into the harbour, and most visitors are either heading onto the water or coming back windblown from it. A serious fire at the end of 2024 damaged part of the historic boardwalk and the Whale Interpretive Centre, so check current openings before planning a visit.

Telegraph Cove is not a full-service town, and that is part of the bargain. Come for a focused day or two on the water, not for urban comforts. When the weather cooperates, a whale-watching trip, a kayak paddle, and a slow walk along the rebuilt boardwalk make the long drive north feel worthwhile.
