Wells-Barkerville

Cariboo gold-rush base with a restored boomtown, mountain arts scene, and canoe country nearby.

Wells-Barkerville is a small Cariboo pairing: Wells, the old mining town where people stay and make art, and Barkerville, the restored gold-rush town just up the road. It sits east of Quesnel near the Cariboo Mountains, far enough from the main highways to feel like a deliberate detour.

Barkerville Historic Town is the main draw. It preserves the boomtown that grew after Billy Barker's 1860s gold strike, with boardwalks, shops, interpreters, Chinese community history, and enough buildings to make the place feel like a town rather than a display. Wells adds a different layer: a tiny northern arts community built out of a 1930s mining settlement.

This is worth adding to a Cariboo trip if you like frontier history, old wooden streets, live performance, or long outdoor routes. It is not a quick urban stop, but a traveller already in Quesnel or crossing the interior would be glad to spend a spare day here.
