Port Renfrew

Remote Vancouver Island coast village beside tide pools, old-growth forest, and the Juan de Fuca Trail.

Port Renfrew sits at the end of the road on southwestern Vancouver Island, where the forest runs down to a hard Pacific coast. It is tiny and weather-beaten, but the surroundings are strong enough to make it more than a logging-road outpost.

The headline is Botanical Beach, one of the best tide-pool sites on the island and the western end of the Juan de Fuca Marine Trail. Inland, Avatar Grove gives a short but memorable old-growth walk among giant cedars and Douglas firs.

This is not a place for polished comforts. Come for low tide, rain gear, big trees, and the sense that Victoria is much farther away than the map suggests.

Guide

Getting There

Port Renfrew is reached by road from Sooke and Victoria, or from Lake Cowichan on the Pacific Marine Circle Route. A car is the practical choice; distances are modest on the map, but the roads are winding and weather can slow the trip.
