Butchart Gardens

Butchart Gardens is the island's most famous cultivated landscape, a former limestone quarry turned into sunken gardens, rose beds, Japanese plantings, and polished paths. It is busy and expensive, but the scale and upkeep are hard to dismiss.

Go early or late if you can. Summer evenings bring concerts and fireworks on selected nights, while spring bulbs and autumn colour give the gardens a reason to visit outside peak season.

A story
Jennie Butchart began planting the exhausted quarry near her family's cement works in the early 20th century. The Sunken Garden is still the cleverest part: industrial scar tissue made into one of Canada's best-known gardens.
