A car makes Vancouver Island much easier. Public buses connect the main east-coast towns and some west-coast services run to Tofino, but trailheads, beaches, and small communities are awkward without your own wheels.
Drive times are longer than the map suggests. Highway 4 to Tofino is narrow and winding, north-island roads can be quiet, and winter storms occasionally interrupt west-coast access. Build slack into ferry days.
