Selkirk

Red River city near Winnipeg, known for catfish, fur-trade history, marsh birds, and lake ships.

Selkirk sits on the Red River just northeast of Winnipeg. It is close enough to the city for an easy day trip, but it has its own odd, useful identity: lake ships on land, catfish pride, a lift bridge, and major Red River history nearby.

The Marine Museum of Manitoba is the town's best reason to stop, with historic vessels that explain Selkirk's place between the Red River and Lake Winnipeg. South of town, Lower Fort Garry is one of Manitoba's strongest historic sites.

Add Oak Hammock Marsh if birds and wetlands interest you. Selkirk is not a polished destination, but it makes a good, varied day outside Winnipeg.
