The St Andrews Blockhouse is one of the few surviving blockhouses from the War of 1812 in Canada. It was built in 1812 by the New Brunswick militia to defend the town against potential American attack — Saint Andrews, located very close to the Maine border, was considered vulnerable. The American attack never came, but the blockhouse was maintained.
The two-storey log structure stands on the waterfront above the bay, surrounded by a small park. Parks Canada maintains it as a National Historic Site. It is a modest but evocative remnant of the period when the border between New Brunswick and Maine was uncertain and contested.
