When to Go

Summer (June to September) is the primary season. The whale watching runs from June to October, with peak whale numbers in July and August coinciding with the shorebird spectacle at Mary's Point. Hopewell Rocks and Fundy National Park are busiest in July and August; visiting midweek or early morning avoids the worst of the crowds.

The tidal phenomenon itself is equally dramatic at any time of year — the range is greatest around new and full moons, when spring tides add further to the natural maximum. But winter visits require preparation for cold, wind, and sometimes ice.

Fog is a fact of life on the Fundy shore in summer. It rolls in from the cold bay with little warning and can persist for days. It doesn't reduce the tidal spectacle, but it eliminates the views.

The Fundy shore is within a day's drive of Halifax, Moncton, Saint John, and the Maine coast.
