Hartland is a small Saint John River town in western New Brunswick, famous far beyond its size for the Hartland Covered Bridge. At 390.75 metres, it is the longest covered bridge in the world, and it gives this otherwise quiet river town a clear reason to pull off the highway.
This is not a full-day destination unless you are slow-travelling the Saint John River Valley. It is a good, satisfying stop between Fredericton, Woodstock, and Edmundston: walk the bridge, look back at the river from the Somerville side, and then poke around the compact Main Street.
The town's other sights are modest but fit the bridge-town identity. The old post office now holds the Dr. Walter Chestnut Public Library, and the nearby Covered Bridge Potato Chips Factory adds a very New Brunswick kind of side trip when tours or the gift shop are running.
