Almonte

Historic Ontario mill town on the Mississippi River, with textile heritage and Naismith connections.

Almonte is a small mill town west of Ottawa, set on the Mississippi River where old stone industrial buildings still frame the falls. It is close enough to the capital for an easy half-day, but it does not feel like a suburb. The centre has its own texture: river views, independent shops, and a compact main street that still shows its 19th-century bones.

The town's best story is textile history. The Mississippi Valley Textile Museum occupies part of the former Rosamond Woollen Mill complex, once tied to one of Canada's major woollen operations. Nearby, the riverwalk turns the old industrial edge into a pleasant short wander.

Almonte also has a claim on basketball history. James Naismith was born in the area, and the Mill of Kintail combines conservation-area trails with a museum about Naismith and sculptor R. Tait McKenzie. For a spare day from Ottawa, that mix is enough: mills, falls, a good small-town centre, and a real national sports footnote.
