Yellowknife is a small city and most of the main attractions can be reached on foot from the downtown core. Old Town is a short walk from downtown hotels, and the Frame Lake trail circuit covers the main cultural institutions. Taxis are readily available and relatively affordable.
A car is useful for visiting the Ingraham Trail east of the city or for reaching aurora viewing spots outside town at night. Car rentals are available at the airport and a few downtown locations. In winter, be prepared for extreme cold — diesel vehicles sometimes need engine block heaters, and rental companies will brief you on cold-weather procedures. There is no public bus system worth relying on for visitors.
