Getting There

Yellowknife is served by Yellowknife Airport (YZF), with direct flights to Calgary, Edmonton, and Ottawa on Air Canada and Canadian North. Edmonton is the most common gateway, with several flights daily. The airport is about 5 kilometres from downtown; taxis are the main ground transport.

There is no road connection to the south in summer — the highway system from Alberta terminates at the NWT border at Enterprise, from where Highway 1 leads to the Mackenzie River crossing at Fort Providence, and Highway 3 continues to Yellowknife. This is a long drive (over 1,500 kilometres from Edmonton) but a genuine road trip through boreal wilderness. In winter, ice roads extend the network considerably and some goods are transported by truck across the frozen lakes.
