Pubnico is a string of harbour communities on Nova Scotia's southwest coast, near Yarmouth. It is one of the best places in the province to understand Acadian continuity: the area was founded in the 17th century by Philippe Mius d'Entremont, and many residents still trace family roots back to the early settlement.
The harbour is the centre of the place. Fishing wharves, low houses, wind turbines, and Acadian flags give the coast a working, lived-in feel. West Pubnico is strongly French-speaking, while Pubnico Head and East Pubnico are more English-speaking, so the culture shifts subtly as you move around the harbour.
Pubnico is quiet, but it is not empty. Come for Acadian history, seafood, lighthouses, and a slower stretch of coast than the busier Halifax-to-Lunenburg route.
