Chéticamp

Acadian fishing village on the Cabot Trail beside Cape Breton Highlands National Park.

Chéticamp is an Acadian fishing village on the west coast of Cape Breton, squeezed between the Gulf of St. Lawrence and the highlands. It is one of the best bases on the Cabot Trail because the village has its own culture, not just a convenient address near the park gate.

The Acadian character is visible in the language, music, food, and craft traditions. Les Trois Pignons is the best place to start, especially for Chéticamp's hooked-rug tradition, which turns a practical household craft into serious folk art.

The landscape gives the village its other half. Cape Breton Highlands National Park begins just north of town, with the Acadian Trail climbing to broad views over the coast and river valley. The short Gypsum Mine & Quarry Trail and the quiet edges of Chéticamp Island round out a good day without needing to rush around the whole Cabot Trail.
