Clifton Hill

Niagara's neon-lit tourist strip — unabashedly tacky and surprisingly fun

Clifton Hill is the tourist strip running from the falls up to the main intersection above the gorge, lined with wax museums, haunted houses, chain restaurants, mini-golf courses, and midway attractions. It is unambiguously tacky, openly commercial, and makes no apologies for either. It is also, in its own way, quite fun — the kind of fun that requires turning off your irony for an hour.

The strip is particularly spectacular at night, when the neon signs compete with the falls' own illuminations. Niagara's two casinos (Casino Niagara and Fallsview Casino Resort, with its massive glass tower overlooking the falls) are nearby. The Fallsview Casino is worth a visit even if you do not gamble — the view of the Horseshoe Falls from the glass-walled gaming floor is genuinely outstanding.

A story
Clifton Hill was a quiet residential street until the postwar tourism boom transformed it in the 1950s and 1960s. The wax museums, haunted houses, and carnival attractions that now line it are a direct descendant of the roadside attractions that sprang up across North America when car travel democratised tourism. Clifton Hill is essentially a preserved example of 1950s tourist capitalism, and its cheerful vulgarity has its own nostalgic appeal.
