Point Pelee National Park juts southward from the Ontario mainland into Lake Erie, tapering to a sharp point that marks the southernmost tip of the Canadian mainland. Its mix of marsh, forest, and open lakefront makes it one of the finest birdwatching sites in North America — during the spring and autumn migrations, hundreds of species pass through or pause to rest, and dedicated birders come from across the continent for the spectacle.
Beyond the tip of Point Pelee lies Pelee Island, the southernmost inhabited point in Canada and the largest island in Lake Erie. About 300 people live here year-round, with the population rising to around 1,500 during summer. The island has a genuinely relaxed pace — cycling is the best way to get around, and it produces wine from its own vineyards thanks to the long growing season.
Ferry service operates from mid-March to mid-December from Leamington and Kingsville on the Ontario mainland, and from Sandusky, Ohio. Vehicle reservations are recommended in peak season.
