Temagami

Northern Ontario lake town known for old-growth pine, canoe routes, and a fire-tower view.

Temagami is a small Highway 11 town with a much larger wilderness behind it. The settlement itself is modest, but it sits beside Lake Temagami, old canoe country, and some of Ontario's last stands of old red and white pine.

The reason to stop is not town life. It is the view from the Temagami Fire Tower, the restored railway station, the easy lake access at Finlayson Point Provincial Park, and the sense that the road has reached the edge of something wilder.

Temagami works well as a one-day break if you are driving between North Bay and Temiskaming Shores. Hike up for the tower view, look at the station, swim or paddle from the lake shore, and save bigger canoe trips for another visit.
