Tobermory is the little harbour at the tip of the Bruce Peninsula, where Georgian Bay turns clear, cold, and startlingly blue. It is small in winter and busy in summer, but the setting is strong enough to survive the crowds: limestone cliffs, shipwrecks, island boats, and the northern end of the Bruce Trail.
The town is the launch point for Fathom Five National Marine Park, where divers and glass-bottom boats work over protected wrecks. On land, the Bruce Trail Cairn marks the end of Canada's classic escarpment walk, while Big Tub Lighthouse keeps watch over the harbour.
Tobermory needs planning in high season. Parking and boat trips book out, and the famous Grotto in Bruce Peninsula National Park is managed more tightly than a casual beach stop. Go anyway if you can: this is one of Ontario's best small-town nature bases.
