Science North

Science North is Northern Ontario's main science museum and consistently rated one of the best in Canada. Spread across two seven-storey hexagonal buildings cantilevered over Ramsey Lake, it has the usual hands-on physics and biology galleries, a butterfly room and beaver pond, a digital planetarium and IMAX cinema, and a tornado simulator that genuinely soaks you.

What lifts it above other regional science museums is the staff. "Bluecoat" scientists — including university researchers — wander the floor and will happily talk through the exhibits at any level. Aim for a full half-day; combined tickets with Dynamic Earth save money.

A story
The two snowflake-shaped buildings sit on a rocky outcrop that the architects refused to dynamite — instead the interior of the main building runs through a natural billion-year-old fault, which visitors walk past on the way in.
