Sudbury has a continental climate with four very distinct seasons. Summers are warm and dry, with highs of 25 °C and the lakes warm enough for swimming from late June into early September. Winters are long, snowy, and properly cold — January averages around -13 °C, with -30 °C cold snaps once or twice a year.
June to September is the obvious window for outdoor activities — paddling, hiking, festivals, and patio life. Northern Lights Festival Boréal takes place in early July, Up Here urban arts festival in mid-August.
Late September to mid-October brings excellent fall colour across the surrounding bush. The summer crowds have gone and the air is sharp.
December to March is cold but Sudbury embraces it — cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, ice fishing, and Wolves hockey games all peak here. Ramsey Lake freezes over and the city looks completely different.
April and November are the in-between months — too late for snow sports, too early for hiking. Avoid unless you have business in town.
