New Denver is a small village on Slocan Lake in British Columbia's West Kootenays, quiet enough that it can look like a pause between more famous mountain towns. Stay a little longer and it becomes more distinct: lake shore, old mining country, Japanese Canadian internment history, and access to some fine Selkirk hiking.
The strongest stop is the Nikkei Internment Memorial Centre, which tells one of Canada's harsher wartime stories in the place where it happened. The Silvery Slocan Museum fills in the mining and settlement history, while Kohan Reflection Garden brings that memory down to the lake edge.
The setting does the rest. Galena Trail follows an old railway grade through forest and mining country, and Idaho Peak gives one of the great high views over Slocan Lake when the road is open.
