Lake Superior Provincial Park

Just south of Wawa, the Trans-Canada Highway threads through one of the most spectacular stretches of Lake Superior coastline anywhere. Lake Superior Provincial Park covers more than 1,500 square kilometres of granite headlands, beaches, boreal forest, and trout streams. It is the obvious day trip from Wawa, and a great destination in its own right.

There are multiple short trails for casual visitors — Old Woman Bay, Sand River, and the famous pictograph site at Agawa Rock — and the multi-day Coastal Trail for serious backpackers. The campgrounds at Agawa Bay and Rabbit Blanket Lake fill quickly in July and August; book ahead through Ontario Parks.

A story
At Agawa Rock within the park, Ojibwe pictographs painted in red ochre at least 150 to 400 years ago depict canoes, lynxes, and Mishipeshu — the horned underwater serpent said to control the storms on Lake Superior. The rock face is reached by a short but slippery trail, and Park rangers warn that the lake's waves have killed visitors who lingered too long on the ledge.
