Naufrage is a tiny bayside village in Kings County on Prince Edward Island's northeast coast, the kind of quiet PEI that visitors come looking for — farm country, red sand beaches, and clear Atlantic water. Seals are a regular sight from the shore in the morning. The name comes from the French word for shipwreck — this stretch of coastline was dangerous for sailing ships in the age before a lighthouse.
The Naufrage Lighthouse stands on the harbour point and the harbour is a working lobster fishery with a boardwalk through a salt marsh conservation area. The beaches here are uncrowded even in high summer. The nearby Greenwich section of PEI National Park, about 15 kilometres west, has one of the finest dune and beach systems on the island.
