Bancroft is a small eastern Ontario town with a stronger identity than its size suggests. It calls itself the mineral capital of Canada, and for once the slogan is not empty: the surrounding Canadian Shield has produced uranium, sodalite, marble, feldspar, and enough collectible stone to support a serious rockhound culture.
The town sits on the York River north of Belleville and south of Algonquin Park, with cottage lakes, forest roads, and old rail beds spreading out in every direction. The main street is modest, but you can build a good day around the Bancroft Mineral Museum, the view from Eagle's Nest Park, and a drive or paddle into Silent Lake Provincial Park.
Bancroft works best for travellers who like small-town Ontario when it still feels rough at the edges. Come for rocks, forest, and water rather than a polished resort strip.
