Wemindji

Remote Cree community on James Bay, named for the ochre Paint Hills.

Wemindji is a small Cree community at the mouth of the Maquatua River on the east side of James Bay. It is not a casual add-on to a Québec trip; reaching it takes a flight or a long road journey through Eeyou Istchee. But if you are already travelling the James Bay country, it has a clear identity that most northern service towns do not.

The name means "painted hills" or "ochre mountains", a reference to the red pigment in the surrounding land. The modern village was relocated here in 1959 from Old Factory, but the Cree connection to the coast, islands, rivers, and seasonal travel routes is much older.

Come for guided time on the water, Cree cultural experiences, and the feeling of being on the edge of James Bay rather than merely passing through northern Québec. This is a place to plan ahead, ask locally, and move at the pace of the community.

Things to Do

Wemindji's best experiences are arranged locally and seasonally. Start with the tourism office for boat trips and paddling conditions, ask about Cree cultural activities, and time a visit for the pow wow if your route allows it.
