When to Go

Prince Albert sits solidly in the continental climate zone, which means real seasons in every direction. Summer (June–August) is warm, green, and long — the best time to canoe into the national park, swim at Waskesiu beach, or watch white pelicans circle Lavallée Lake. July and August bring the most visitors. Autumn turns the boreal forest gold and russet; crowds thin and wildlife becomes more visible as the season cools.

Winter is cold — temperatures regularly drop below −30°C — but the national park transforms into a cross-country skiing and snowshoeing destination with groomed trails through spruce and birch. Spring (April–May) is mud season and mosquito season: the lake ice goes out, bears emerge, and the landscape reopens, but be prepared for both.

The Waskesiu townsite inside the national park is only fully open from late May through early September; some facilities close outside that window.
