Carmacks is a small Yukon River village where the North Klondike Highway meets the Robert Campbell Highway. It is an easy place to treat as a fuel stop, but the river, the Little Salmon/Carmacks First Nation, and the old route north give it more substance than its size suggests.
The best day here starts with the local story. Tagé Cho Hudän Interpretive Centre introduces the Northern Tutchone culture of the Little Salmon/Carmacks First Nation, whose ties to this stretch of the Yukon River go back far beyond the Klondike roads. In town, the Carmacks Riverfront Boardwalk gives a slow, open look at the river that made the community possible.
The headline stop is north of town at Five Finger Rapids, where rock islands split the Yukon River into channels. It is a strong pullout even if you are just driving between Whitehorse and Dawson City, and a better one if you have time to walk down from the viewpoint.
