Miles Canyon

Miles Canyon is a dramatic basalt canyon carved by the Yukon River about 8 kilometres south of central Whitehorse. The canyon walls rise 15 metres above the water, and the compressed river turns a vivid green as it passes through. A suspension bridge spans the narrowest point, giving you a view straight down into the current. The canyon and the surrounding park are accessed by trails through a pleasant forested area.

The hike from the trailhead to the suspension bridge and back is about 10 kilometres on easy paths and takes two to three hours at a relaxed pace. It's one of the better day walks near Whitehorse and gives you a feel for the sub-boreal forest that surrounds the city. In summer the area is popular for picnicking and swimming in the calmer stretches upstream from the canyon.

A story
Miles Canyon was one of the most feared obstacles on the route to the Klondike goldfields. The rapids below the canyon killed several stampeders in 1897, prompting the North-West Mounted Police to require that women and children portage around them. A tramway was built to move goods around the worst sections, and the canyon became a profitable bottleneck that made the tramway operators rich.
