S.S. Klondike National Historic Site

The S.S. Klondike is a fully restored sternwheeler beached on the banks of the Yukon River and designated a National Historic Site of Canada. It was one of the last great riverboats of the Yukon — a wood-burning paddle wheeler that carried passengers and freight between Whitehorse and Dawson City for decades before the road connections made river transport obsolete. The restoration is excellent, and the interior has been returned to its 1930s configuration.

Parks Canada staff lead guided tours through the vessel, explaining the mechanics of sternwheel river navigation, the freight trade, and the lives of the crews who worked these boats. The wheelhouse, engine room, and passenger cabins are all accessible. Even without a guide, the ship is an impressive sight from the riverbank. Entry is free with a Parks Canada pass or at low cost otherwise.

A story
The Klondike was the largest and most powerful sternwheeler to run the upper Yukon River, capable of pushing a tow of barges carrying 300 tonnes of freight — the equivalent of a freight train — against the river's powerful current. She ran the route until 1955, when road improvements finally made river freight uneconomical.
