Practical Information

Currency: The Cayman Islands dollar (CI$) is fixed to the US dollar at CI$1.00 = US$1.25. US dollars are accepted everywhere at this rate. Credit and debit cards are widely accepted, though some smaller local businesses may add a surcharge. ATMs are readily available in George Town and along Seven Mile Beach.

Visas: Most nationalities do not need a visa for stays up to 30 days. Proof of onward travel and sufficient funds may be required. Your passport should be valid beyond your departure date.

Language: English. Caymanians speak with a distinctive lilt that carries traces of old British Isles dialects.

Health: No vaccinations are required. Medical facilities on Grand Cayman are good by Caribbean standards; the Cayman Islands Hospital in George Town handles most needs. Medical care is expensive — travel insurance is strongly recommended. The sister islands have limited medical facilities and serious cases are transferred to Grand Cayman.

Safety: Crime rates are low by regional standards. Petty theft does occur, particularly around cruise ship docks and beaches. The main threat to beach-goers is sun and the box jellyfish (Portuguese man-of-war) that occasionally wash ashore.

Phone and internet: Mobile coverage is good on Grand Cayman and reasonable on the sister islands. Most hotels and cafes offer wi-fi. The country code is +1 345.

Time zone: EST (UTC-5), with no daylight saving time adjustment.

Electricity: 120V/60Hz, same as the US and Canada. British plugs are also used in some older buildings.
