Piedras Blancas National Park

Piedras Blancas protects 14,000 hectares of intact lowland rainforest immediately northwest of Golfito, sitting at the head of the Golfo Dulce. It is the most accessible large block of rainforest along the Pacific south coast — easier to reach than Corcovado, with similarly rich wildlife and a fraction of the visitors.

Trails enter the park from the Esquinas Rainforest Lodge and from the village of La Gamba. The full traverse of the park requires a guide and several days; day visitors can choose from a handful of well-marked loops. Tapirs, peccary, and ocelots are all present; the bird list runs to over 350 species.

A story
The park was created in 1991 with substantial Austrian funding — environmentalists in Vienna led a campaign to buy out the timber concessions before logging could begin. Locals still sometimes call the park 'the Esquinas rainforest', the Austrian name for it, and the Esquinas Rainforest Lodge that funds park rangers from its room rates is run by an Austrian foundation.
