Heredia's position in the Central Valley makes it an excellent base for day excursions. San José is 30 minutes away by bus or car — close enough for a morning at the Museo Nacional or the Mercado Central without committing to staying in the capital.
The Braulio Carrillo National Park is reachable in under an hour, with the Barva volcano trail offering cloud forest and a crater lake. The town of Barva, a few kilometres north, has a well-preserved colonial centre and a good-sized Sunday market. La Paz Waterfall Gardens, a series of five falls descending through montane forest, is about 45 minutes by car and is popular for good reason — the falls are genuinely spectacular and the cloud forest surrounding them is rich in birds.
For a longer day, the Arenal Volcano area is around two and a half hours from Heredia, making it a long but feasible day trip or a convenient first stop before heading further north.
